The corridor problem
Town houses on this street are five metres wide and twenty-two deep, which normally produces a dark spine and two good rooms. We treated the spine as the primary space instead of a route between others.
Light from above
Two roof lights were cut at the third and seventh bay, and the ceiling was lifted between the existing beams. The hallway now receives more daylight than either bedroom, and the family eat there in summer.
The original terrazzo was lifted, cleaned and relaid in the same sequence it was found.
